Jacky the Jackalope’s Personal Stylist
This almost 20-ft tall Jackalope was first erected in the summer of 2018 by Ion Art ATX. Owner and CEO of RED VELVET, Cindy Lo, reached out to the artists at Ion Art with only one prompt; “I need something big, a bit whimsical, and costume ready.” Thus, Jacky the Jackalope was born. Mythic, bold, and playful.
The story of how I came to be at RED VELVET is an interesting one… I moved from Atlanta to Austin in August of 2020 and was primarily focused on setting up my own LLC and getting new clients, BUTTT I couldn’t help but notice this super cool building across the street from my new apartment. At the time, Jacky was decked out in a facemask and bandaid decal. Obviously, a giant jackalope piqued my interest, and I maintained a pretty steady curiosity until it was my time to shine. I applied in the summer of 2021, and they brought me on as the sole creative marketing manager. One of the first things I established was a costume schedule for Jacky the Jackalope. Not only is Jacky hard to miss, but they are also an iconic monument on one of the busiest roads in Austin.
Some of my favorite costumes:
The handmade yarn beard and wizard hat made from a traffic cone and all recycled materials from the Creative Reuse.
Mummy made from leftover sheets from an event.
The flower crown that had SO MANY different seasonal florals
To celebrate the opening of the Barbie Movie, the giant pink scarf (someone stole the tiny purse that went with it, though)
