50 Years in the Making…

CLIENT: Austin PBS

ROLE: Art Direction, Fabrication, Graphic Design, Marketing

The last sixty years of media bore a collection of classics and wonders alike; Austin PBS has been a pioneer in the public broadcasting space in a way that is uniquely Austin. While its deep history laid a very solid foundation for Austin PBS, the future ahead looks even brighter. The Austin PBS and RED VELVET partnership began in late 2021 with the planning of their media center grand opening weekend. As the relationship grew the RV team was tasked with building bigger and better ways for the community to engage with the PBS brand and affiliates like ACL Live and Austin City Limits Music Festival.

A transformation after dark

The “CUBE” made its debut at Austin City Limits music festival in 2023. This traveling interactive photobooth saw thousands of festival goers a day decked out in ACL props. The star of the show over thirty retro TVs in WORKING CONDITION playing the last fifty years of ACL Live performances. This stunning activation was incredible throughout the day but truly came to life at night when the TVs could glow with the sound of vintage static.

On the road again

At the end of the day, PBS is a publically-funded entity. Budgets were a healthy serving but certainly no five-course meal. When a local Austin Chevy dealership stepped up to sponsor this roadshow I was given the exciting job of designing and managing the installation of a refreshed exterior of this cube.

In addition to the exterior wrap, we decided to part with the AV company used for the TV’s, so— hand in hand with the RV CEO, Cindy Lo, I sourced as many old TVs as possible, testing a million different input cords on the floor of the office just trying our best.
