Moodboards are My Spirit Animal

What’s the first step in every creative’s process? (except for maybe grabbing an eighth cup of coffee for the day) Its a moodboard. Always a moodboard. Its the foundational inspiration that every brand, idea, or business is built from. I am now at the point of my career where I have probably made about a thousand different moodboards either for clients, friends, myself, or sometimes just for fun.

From an incredibly young age, I was ripping apart my teen vouge and national geographic magazines and using my cork board to pin up just about every clipping that made me feel a certain way. While I had no idea what I was doing at the time, I did know that having these little bits of inspiration for me to see when I got home from a late soccer practice or while hiding from my (at the time) obnoxious little siblings, it made me happy, it gave me motivation and better yet, it was constantly evolving.

I love making moodboards so much I decided to do a passion project with my team at RED VELVET introducing them to my creative process. I handed out tiny slips of paper to everyone with a small prompt.

Ex: Vegan Taco Truck | Description: small quirky, fun, playful

I then brought out all my fabric and color samples, old magazines, and my ideation booklet I got from the MOMA. Everyone got to work creating their moodboards and at the end, we all got to match the prompt to the inspo. It was a super fun activity for a mundane Wednesday afternoon and I truly believe my team left feeling a bit more confident in their creativity, which is all I could hope for.
